Deuteronomy 20:1-4

Nissi means a standard, a banner, an ensign and a sail.

Deuteronomy 20: 1. When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

  1. For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you agginst your enemies, to save you.

When we step out from our houses, all that we see is an unpredictable situation. The world around us has become a battleground. Every one is fighting for his or her livelihood. Daily challenges and problems are the horses and chariots that come against us. They are huge in size and out number us. We are overwhelmed by pain, suffering and uncertainty. Especially, today as we battle against the unseen enemy, the Covid 19, the world is chaotic. It is indeed a monumental problem. The large scale suffering and damage that it has caused remind us of the horses, chariots and foot soldiers on the battlefield. The scene is dangerous and makes us panic.

But, we, believers need not fear because our God, Jehovah Nissi , our banner walks before us. The bible tells us that God will fight on our behalf. In Exodus 17 : 15 , we read about how Moses built an altar and called it Jehovah Nissi. Nissi means a banner that symbolises victory.

In Hebrew it means "to glisten” or to shine. The banners carried by the soldiers who led the battle would shine above all those fighting on the battlefield. In the same way, when our God is walking before us , He is shining with victory. He is our guiding light. Even if the storms of life are drowning us, yet Jehovah Nissi is the one to pull us through. We need to remember the countless blessings He has already given us. This will encourage us to move forward. Even if we are not totally prepared for the challenge, God will protect us because we are under his banner. We belong to Him and His heavenly kingdom. Jesus is our Jehovah Nissi. The CROSS is our Banner. We have to take refuge under the shadow of the cross. It reminds me of the words in a song, "The CROSS before me, the world behind me,  No turning back,  No turning back. "

Let this be our song and determination. No matter what, we will always be under God's banner. Another point is that the Holy Spirit is also our banner. The Holy Spirit walks before us and straightens all the crooked paths.

God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, are our strength. This great banner should be displayed high above the storms of life. (Psalms 60: 4 and 5 ).  Then , we are encouraged to move forward and become more than conquerors. Let the divine Banner fly HIGH.  Jehovah Nissi  is Jehovah Shammah and Jehovah Jireh. Praise the Lord. Amen  and amen.

Prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus,

We have decided to follow you with all of our heart. Let the divine Banner fly high through our lives. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
